Miss Grit – Tourist Mind
Margaret Sohn returns as Miss Grit with “Tourist Mind”, their first release in two years since the 2023 debut “Follow The Cyborg”. The track wrestles with the disorienting effect of getting lost in other people’s thoughts, exploring what it means to find your way back to yourself.
Sohn builds the song around trip-hop’s shadowy atmosphere but pushes it into maximalist territory. Heavy drums anchor sweeping strings while maintaining a dream-pop haze. It’s a techno stomper that doesn’t lose its sense of space. The production keeps things dense without cluttering the mix.
Lyrically, Sohn fixates on the idea of self-erasure, finding power in solitude rather than connection. “I’ve never wanted to be so alone” isn’t a confession of loneliness but an embrace of self-reliance. The “tourist mind” metaphor captures that feeling of temporarily inhabiting someone else’s headspace and struggling to return to your own.
Released through Mute, the track marks a confident return for the New York-based artist. Sohn has spent the past two years away from releasing music, appearing on mui zyu’s “please be okay” in 2024. “Tourist Mind” shows that time away sharpened their ability to blend electronic production with emotional weight.
